In the early days, people would request songs and if musicians were successful in playing, they could earn a tip. The tips would be larger if the song requested would be a sentimental one and the musician could play it well. These tips were the main source of revenue for the musicians. Most of the musicians would buy vocal books, cut the melody line, lyrics and chords and paste them in a page and similarly compile several pages to form a book.
