Im thinking of getting the Barnes and Noble Nook Ebook reader for my girlfriend for Christmas but am not sure?
I understand how it works. If I get the version that comes with 3G does that mean she can browse and download books from anywhere? Also is that free for ever or will there be some kind of fee’s?
Here’s my answer for you, sadiesamkurby, as detailed as I could.
You can get Nook e-Ink (3G or Wi-Fi) or Nook Color Android eReader/tablet (Wi-Fi). 3G means the internet connection is included for free for the life of the device thus you can download a new book even when you’re walking on the street. Wi-Fi means that you need to have access to wireless hotspot – one example would be any Barnes & Noble store that provides free Wi-Fi to Nook’s or at your home to download Ebooks. Once eBooks are downloaded, you don’t need Internet connection to read them. There’s over a million of free public ebooks as well as over a million of ebooks that you need to pay for available through Barnes & Noble eBook store. Prices are generally much lower than for physical books.
You should understand the limitations of e-Ink eReaders – they are limited to be black & white for now they “blink” at each ebookâs page turn, they’re not too good for web browsing, they need external light source for reading when dark, and they cannot handle videos.
Thus the better would be a hybrid device which combines the better parts of both eReader and tablet worlds. Such device is Nook Color from Barnes & Noble which is a hybrid Android eReader/tablet and has USB port (unlike iPad). Nook Color has a new generation screen which is anti-glare coated and is better performing in sunlight and for reducing eye strain than iPad’s. The screen is one of the best and sharpest on the market and it’s viewable at wide angles. It is great for PDF’s, much better than Kindle. From the cost side, you can buy two Nook Color’s for the price of one iPad.
Another thing to consider – you could get NOOK app for PC, MAC, Android phones, Apple iPhone, iPod and iPad, etc. thus you could browse and get a book into your library from your PC, for example, and next time you’re reading on your Nook you’ll only need Internet connection for a quick download of the book to the device. Also, with the latest firmware, you can start reading on your Nook right from the same place you finished reading the same book on your PC or phone – it sync’es where you left off between all the devices that have B&N NOOK app installed.
