is it legal to upload books in pdf format to kindle 2?

Ive gotten some books from that pdf sharing website called Scribd and ive put them on my kindle and started reading them. i like that i can get books i want to read without having to pay, but is this legal? because id rather get pdfs than buy the book on Amazon.

If the books are copyrighted then it is illegal.
